Aquaporins, also called water channels, are channel proteins from a larger family of major intrinsic proteins that form pores in the membrane of biological cells, mainly facilitating transport of water between cells. the cell membranes of a variety of different bacteria, fungi, animal and plant cells contain aquaporins through which water can flow more rapidly into and out of the cell than by diffusing through the phospholipid bilayer. aquaporins have six membrane-spanning alpha helical domains. Aquaporins (aqps) are a family of membrane water channel proteins that osmotically modulate water fluid homeostasis in several tissues; some of them also transport small solutes such as glycerol. at the cellular level, the aqps regulate not only cell migration and transepithelial fluid transport across membranes, but also common events that are crucial for the inflammatory response.. Without the selectivity mechanism and because of the larger pore size, the haqp1-ha/rv mutant is highly permeable to apolar solutes, as well as to nh 3 and urea. in aquaglyceroporins, the ar/r region is wider than in aqp1 and has a more hydrophobic pocket opposite to the arginine..

The mechanism by which water passes through biological membranes was a matter of debate until the discovery of the aquaporin water channels. aquaporins are intrinsic membrane proteins characterized by six transmembrane helices that selectively allow water or other small uncharged molecules to pass along the osmotic gradient.. Footnote: expression localization of aquaporins in kidney. aquaporin-1 is located in proximal tubule, descending thin limbs of henle, and vasa recta; aquaporin-2, aquaporin-3, aquaporin-4, aquaporin-5 and aquaporin-6 are in the collecting duct; aquaporin-7 and aquaporin-11 are expressed in proximal tubule. [source 62)]. aquaporin-1 is the first discovered water channel, and is located in the.
